Writing Guidelines

The OUP academic style guide is here.

Word Limits. Word limits were given on your invite letters and differ by Part. In general, chapters in Parts II and III should be no more than 11,000 words, and chapters in Parts IV, V, and VI should be no more than 8,500 words.

Style. Please follow the Chicago Manual of Style guidelines for author-date citations, at: https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide/citation-guide-2.html

Figures. If you are using tables or figures, please indicate them with callouts in brackets and bold font, e.g. “[insert Fig 3 here].” Also, please provide each Figure, Graph, or Table in separate files.

Footnotes. Please keep footnotes to a minimum.

Bibliography. The bibliography should list all works cited in your article and should not contain any works that you haven’t cited. If some core works are not cited in your article, you may provide additional references to be posted in the BIBLIOGRAPHY section on the Handbook’s website.

Headings. Headings and subheadings should be concise, consistently formatted, and clearly identifiable. This means all first-level headings should be formatted the same way, all second-level headings should be formatted the same way and differently from first-level headings, and so on. Use no more than three levels of headings. Think of headings as keywords for an online search. Headings must not include cross-references or cues to tables, figures, or notes.

Format. For the final submission to OUP, manuscript page is a double-spaced, letter-size page, typed in Times New Roman 12 point. Please minimize formatting such as bold, underlining, manual section and page breaks.

URLs. You may link from a specific place in your text to an address. Simply provide the full URL in your manuscript.
